Pick-up Against the Braves

Backyard Baseball
Ever since Abner Doubleday created the glorious game of baseball, it has reached the hearts of millions of adults and children yearning for excitement. In the game Backyard Baseball, the creators at Humongous Entertainment have combined pickup games that happen in towns and the Major Leagues to 'marry' them together into one amazing game. The game consists of many of the game's best pros back in 2001 and 2002, including the 'great' Barry Bonds, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Albert Pujols. In the game, you have the option to choose what field to play on, teams (including all thirty Major League teams), difficulty level, and who you play with. For example, I could be the Chicago Cubs and have the team of Derek Jeter, Frank Robinson, Albert Pujols, Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro Suzuki, Jimmy Rollins, Mike Piazza (who is on the cover), and Randy Johnson. The mixture of being able to have the players you know and love and the kids in the Backyard series make for the most excellent combination of a game. There are five modes to the Backyard Baseball game. There is Quick Game, Home Run Derby, Single Game (different from quick game in the way you can draft and choose settings), Season Mode, and Multiplayer, which is not compatible on Vizzed. Each mode provides you something different that will keep you interested in the game for a long time.
Graphics 5: This is the main flaw of the game. Even though this game was released in 2002, the game still has that pixel-like look. It is very distracting sometimes to look at the game when you are either pitching or batting and notice how the pixels stand out very much unlike other games. Also, I feel as if some of the players look a little odd, such as how one player looks like her head resembles an eggplant.
Sound 9: The sounds in this game, with the exception of one, are very well made. I enjoyed listening to the different sounds and how the sounds varied when certain things happened. The only problem with the sound, though, is that there is one girl who yells the same thing every time no matter what happens. It was enough to tick me off and put it in this review.
Addictiveness 10: With all of the game modes and player combinations you can choose, it was hard to put the game down and play another. I will likely go back and play this game again until I have done everything with every single character. That is how addictive the game is to me.
Story Omitted: There is no main 'story', so the story section is invalid to this review.
Depth 10: Like I said earlier, this game has five different game modes and many characters to choose from. Also, since the game has the Single Game option, the game will never end.
Difficulty 7: It took me a while to get used to the timing of the game, but when things seemed to start to click, I had a blast. You will always be challenged by this game unless you play on too low of a difficulty, in that case you should boost your difficulty and change your settings. This is not the hardest game in the world, but is very fun and challenging to play.
Overall, this game receives the score of an 8.2. This game offers the ability to play as the pros in a kids world, which provides a new look on baseball and how it is played in neighborhoods and towns today. I would recommend this game to anyone who has played baseball in their lives, watched baseball, or played other baseball games (such as MLB the Show).

Build the championship baseball team of your dreams and play with the Pros in your own backyard. Create the lineup, take the field and direct all of the action. Earn new pitching and batting power-ups to light up the scoreboard! The Backyard Baseball game includes kid versions of hard-hitting, base-stealing, tough-fielding players including Barry Bonds, Randy Johnson, Mike Piazza and Ichiro.

I swear, if I didn't have the speed up button while playing this, I'd pull my hair out. This game is ridiculously slow-paced.

Baseball

I am a big fan of the Backyard Baseball series and Backyard Baseball 2003 is one of the more fun entries in the series. Many people do not realize just what a big deal this series was. It lasted for around a decade and showed up on a ton of different systems over the years.

Batter Up!

The point of Backyard Baseball 2003 is to give players the chance to play baseball like they did when they were kids. It is such a clever idea as when it comes to kid sports there is just something so very wholesome, fun and adorable about baseball. While the game is all about kids, it features kid versions of some of the players of the day and that is pretty awesome if you ask me.

Like A Cartoon

One of my favorite aspects of the series is the presentation. I know that you could easily make the argument that Backyard Baseball 2003 does not look a whole lot different from the previous game and that is fair. However, there is so much charm here and I do think that things look that little bit sharper and the kids look awesome and just like the kids you would play with at recess when you were at school.

Speaking of recess that is what the graphics actually remind me of, Recess the TV show. That along with other late 90s early 00s kids shows like All Grown Up.

Step Up To The Mound

While it has a cutesy kind of art style and a look like it is a game for kids. Backyard Baseball 2003 actually plays a really great game of baseball. This is the perfect blend of realistic baseball action and arcade fun and as a result, it is very addictive. No matter if you are pitching or batting, the gameplay is nice and tight and you have plenty of different moves that you can do so you can play the game just the way you want.

Plenty To Do

The main game mode is your season. Here you make up your team and then try to take them to backyard baseball glory. It is awesome how they managed to use actual teams in the game and it does make it that little bit more fun if you ask me. The season is very addictive, but if you want to just jump in and have a quick game you can do that. What is neat about that is you can pick all kinds of options ranging from the park you play in, the difficulty, how long the game lasts and so on.Backyard Baseball 2003 also puts a lot of effort into the actual players. You can customize them if you want and that is cool, but what I really like is the way the game will track stats and it even has a hall of fame which for a stats nerd like me was a lot of fun.

In all, I feel that Backyard Baseball 2003 is another solid entry into the series. It is a fun baseball game and the kid style it has really does have a lot of charm. This is a game that can be found on many old game sites, but even tracking down a physical copy is easy and cheap to do. If you like older baseball games, you know before they got all serious. Backyard Baseball 2003 is one that you will have a lot of fun with.

8/10
